Federal Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole had an opportunity last week to get up to speed on issues impacting Northern Ontario.
O’Toole held a virtual tour of the region on Friday.
He met virtually with a wide variety of business and community leaders, discussing how to create opportunities in the region and secure Canada’s future.
Kenora MP Eric Melillo was excited to welcome the leader:
In his meetings O’Toole stressed it’s time to deal with some of the trade irritants involving our largest trading partner.
In an interview with Acadia News, O’Toole proposed a special committee on Canada/US relations.
“We need to have a more serious approach to the most important economic, trade and security relationship Canada has, which is the United States,” explains O’Toole.
“And so we brought a whole debate on that and we’re trying to create a specialized committee to focus on improving this relationship”
O’Toole says now is the right time to set up such a committee with the Biden administration taking over in Washington.
He says Biden’s cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline, the ongoing softwood lumber dispute, steel and aluminum tariffs, just shows the need for such a committee.
