Ontario is tightening restrictions for international travellers to try to stop the spread of COVID-19 variants.
After Friday’s announcement of new federal travel rules, Premier Doug Ford says he is following Justin Trudeau’s lead.
Ford is announcing that air travellers arriving at Pearson Airport from another country must undergo a rapid COVID-19 test. Starting at 12:01 PM on Monday, they will be issued a $750 fine if they don’t agree to the testing.
“We welcome the new measures announced by the federal government today, but we need a stop gap to prevent new cases, including variant cases, from arriving in Ontario until those measures are fully in place,” Ford says.
It’s part of a six-point plan that Ford says in the coming weeks will explore more testing measures at Pearson and Ontario’s land borders.
The plan also includes screening positive COVID-19 patients for symptoms of the the UK, South African and Brazil COVID-19 variants.
