President Donald Trump is now condemning what he describes as the “heinous attack” on the US Capitol.
In a video statement posted to Twitter on Thursday night, Trump said he is outraged by the “violence, lawlessness and mayhem” we all witnessed.
“The demonstrated who infiltrated the Capitol have defiled the seat of American democracy,” said Trump. “To those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country, and to those who broke the law, you will pay.”
The attack came as Congress was meeting to count the electoral college votes from November’s presidential election.
Despite the delay caused by the attack, Congress affirmed President-elect Joe Biden as the winner early Thursday morning.
Trump said emotions are high after the election, but tempers must now be cooled and calm restored.
“A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th,” he said. “My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power.”
Trump went on to say that serving as president for the past four years has been the honour of his lifetime.
“To all of my wonderful supporters, I know you are disappointed, but I also want you to know that our incredible journey is only just beginning.”
