Another social media platform has decided to put outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump in a temporary timeout.
Facebook announced Thursday that it will block Trump on its platforms, including Instagram, for at least the next two weeks “until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”
“We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,” founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post.
The decision comes after Trump supporters breached the inside of the U.S. Capitol building Wednesday while Congress counted the electoral college votes.
One person was fatally shot during the hours-long chaos while three others died from medical emergencies.
Zuckerberg said the “shocking events” of the last 24 hours show Trump intends to use his remaining time in office “to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor.”
“Over the last several years, we have allowed President Trump to use our platform consistent with our own rules, at times removing content or labeling his posts when they violate our policies. We did this because we believe that the public has a right to the broadest possible access to political speech, even controversial speech,” he said.
“But the current context is now fundamentally different, involving use of our platform to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.”
Zuckerberg the priority for the U.S. must now be to ensure Trump’s remaining 13 days in office and the days after inauguration “pass peacefully and in accordance with established democratic norms.”
On Wednesday, Twitter locked the president’s account after he posted three tweets which contained “repeated and severe violations” of its civic integrity policy.
The company said Trump’s account would remain locked for 12 hours after the tweets were deleted.
