Machin Mayor Gord Griffiths admits 2020 was a difficult and challenging year due to the pandemic.
He states town officials spent many, many hours dealing with just COVID-19 related issues and the things they did accomplish took longer than normal.
Griffiths says they started with a very aggressive agenda and states they have a long way to go on a number of projects.
He points out it was difficult to get a hold of government officials on key issues because most people were working from home.
Griffiths notes one good thing came out of last year.
“Our Municipal Modernization Program that we started. It should have been done probably in July. We just got it finished here, just before Christmas, the final report. Things like that that just dragged on and dragged on.”
Businesses and tourism operators in the area were hit hard last year because of shutdowns.
Griffiths says it wasn’t easy but he believes people were able to survive the year.
“But as this still drags on I think 2021 will be much tougher which then directly will impact the Municipality because we obviously operate on tax dollars and revenue from the businesses.”
Griffiths notes if the tourist sector is affected again this year it’s going to cause some real serious issues.
