Dryden has approved a funding agreement with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization as part of the ongoing study of an underground repository in the Ignace area.
The $624,078 will help off-set costs of future studies and learning opportunities.
Chief Administrative Officer Roger Nesbitt says the funding will support a number of positions and activities including:
-Economic Development Manager (existing contract position, partially funded)
-Special Projects and Communications Manager
-Junior Planner
-Youth Internship and youth/student positions
-Legal Counsel and Professional Communication Support
-Salary Allocation for Municipal Staff and Council to cover involvement in APM Initiatives
-Travel and Training Expenses
-Recruitment and Operating Expenses
-Youth Centre Facilitator
-Learning and Engagement initiatives for municipal leadership and staff, community stakeholders and other community members including youth and indigenous residents.
Nesbitt stresses “Without this funding the Municipality would struggle to provide the required resources to adequately participate in this project. The intent of the funding is to elevate as much of the community to a level of understanding so that it provides the ability to form educated opinions and make informed decisions.”
He adds without the money the City would have to incur the costs of studies, travel and information sessions.
Councillor Shayne MacKinnon voted against the deal stating no public debate has been held on the project.
Nesbitt notes no decision has been made and the money will help them learn more about the project in order to make an informed decision.
