My father, Martin Hampe, was born and raised in Eagle River by his parents Carl and Marie Hampe.
He arrived in England in 1943 as a navigator with the R.A.F.
He completed 62 operational missions into enemy territory in a Lancaster Bomber.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and The Bar for his bravery.
Three out of eight of his crew were Canadians. “We were very lucky,” he said. “We only got hit a couple of times and only lost one man when a gunner was hit by a bit of flak.”
Dad passed away in October, 1990.
