The Dryden Police Service would like to warn the public that there have been several sightings reported concerning a mother and cubs in various residential areas throughout the city.
They have managed to advert a trap set out on Orvis Street.
Police are reminding the public that bears are wild animals and should be treated with caution and respect.
Female bears with cubs may become aggressive if they feel their cubs are in danger.
Residents are reminded to practice these safety tips to prevent bears from wandering onto their property:
- Putting garbage out only on the morning of collection
- Sorting garbage waste containers with tight-fitting lids
- Put away bird feeders and offer natural alternatives like flowers, nesting boxes and fresh water
- Clean outdoor grills after each use, including the grease trap underneath.
If you encounter a bear and your personal safety is threatened, you are urged to call the Dryden Police Service at 807-223-3281.
To report bear sightings (non-urgent) residents can contact 1-866-514-2327, which is the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Reporting line.
For other safety tips and information, residents can visit the Ministry of Natural Resources website.
