The Kenora Catholic District School Board, which oversees operations at St. John School in Red Lake, says it has a contingency fund to deal with any COVID-19 related expenses.
The budget includes spending of almost $30 million.
Superintendent of Business Services Alison Smith says they didn’t include any extra program spending this year.
“We are projecting an annual surplus of $112,000 approximately and we did submit a balanced budget determination with the Ministry of Education.”
Smith admits the coronavirus threw a bit of a monkey wrench into their budgeting process.
“Definitely challenging because we didn’t know if school was going to be open at the time. We haven’t planned for any new types of initiatives or anything like that within our schools so we just budgeted based on a standard school year and using that extra expenses for COVID expenses if needed.”
Smith says enrollment, including students who wish to do on-line learning, has been estimated at just over 1,300.
