The MP for Kenora says he’s been in contact with the Ministry of National Defence to ensure that military resources are in place should Red Lake require help.
However, Eric Melillo says military assistance has not been called upon.
“At this point the province has been dealing with the situation, staying on top of it, so we continue to monitor the situation. Should it be called upon, of course, we will be there to make sure that the assistance does come through.”
Melillo says he remains in constant communication with Minister Greg Rickford and Mayor Fred Mota.
“Incredibly important. We can’t really quantify and this has happened very quickly and it’s one of those situations where we need everyone pulling together and sticking together and I think that’s what we’ve seen so far. We are going to continue to do that and ensure that we stay on top of it.”
Greg Rickford says they are able to transport 50 to 100 people by plane right now but stresses the time may come when the province will have to engage the Armed Forces.
