Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are asking people to be aware of their surroundings when outdoors.
The reminder follows a suspected bear attack Monday that resulted in the death of a 67 year old Red Lake man.
The Ministry stresses black bear attacks are extremely rare and a threatened or predatory bear will give off warning signs to let you know you are too close.
If you encounter a bear you are asked to stop, remain calm, and slowly walk away while keeping the animal in sight.
If the bear doesn’t leave, you should throw objects, wave your arms and make noise with a whistle or air horn and prepare to use bear spray.
The Ministry says what you shouldn’t do is
- Run, climb a tree or swim.
- Kneel down.
- Make direct eye contact.
- Approach the bear to get a better look.
- Attempt to feed a bear.
If a bear poses an immediate threat to public safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, call 911 or your local police.
