A drowning death on the Manitoba side of Lake of the Woods shows the importance of wearing a life jacket.
A 67 year old man died while fishing near Buffalo Point.
Dr. Chris Love from the Life Saving Society says a life jacket in the boat does you no good if you’re not wearing it.
“We have seen case after case where people may think ‘I’ll just grab it if there’s problems.’ Well once your out of the boat or if you hit your head as you’re falling out of the boat you’re not going to be in a position to grab that life jacket.”
Dr. Love says wearing a life jacket once you immediately enter your boat prevents a huge number of drowning deaths we see every year.
The most recent drowning report shows that 78% of victims are men and people over the age of 50 are more likely to drown.
