Mason Brown and Emily Heil are the big winners of the 2019-2020 virtual Dryden Eagles Athletic Awards banquet.
The multi-team athletes were named Most Valuable Players Thursday night.
Brown was also named Senior Boys Volleyball MVP, Senior Boys Basketball Coaches Award and Cross-Country MVP, while Heil received the Senior Girls Basketball MVP and Senior Girls Volleyball MVP awards.
Fiona Cook and Carter McKinstry were named Rookies of the Year.
Cook also received the Junior Girls Basketball Most Improved Player award.
Tristan Stemkins Mineault and Lauren Bell secured the Dryden Eagles Sportsman and Sportswoman awards.
Bell was also named Girls Golf Most Valuable Player.
This was the first time in DHS history that coaches, players and parents couldn’t gather in-person because of COVID-19.
However, instructor Paul Darling used his expertise to put together an online ceremony with speeches from the coaches.
Principal Richard Hodgkinson opened the event with the following message.
“You are being rewarded for your talent and your dedication to your sport. And for being outstanding examples of what can be achieved and the role models for others.”
Athletic Director Geoff Zilkalns says “While we lost Badminton, Soccer and Track and Field this year, we do hope to fly again soon as Eagles. In the meantime, we thought it was important to recognize the great efforts of the athletes that did get to participate this year and continue the tradition of the banquet.”
Zilkalns also took time to remember two people the Eagles family lost this year.
“Mark Lugli attended Dryden High as an athlete in his time and became an excellent father, fan and supporter of our program. His son Jacob excelled in Volleyball, Golf, Hockey and Soccer and during this very awards banquet last year was named our Athlete of the Year. While both are no longer with us, their legacy as Eagles will continue forever.”
A moment of silence was observed in their honour.
