Economist says there are signs the economy is beginning to recover from COVID-19.
Saint FX professor Greg Tkacz says relaxing COVID-19 restrictions is a major contributor.
Tkacz tells The Hawk opening provinces are rebounding.
“As economies, as provinces start slowly reopening and lifting restrictions, we’re going to see a pretty substantial increase in employment.”
Tkacz says employment is up, 290,000 more people had jobs in May than April.
He says, even record high unemployment doesn’t spoil the picture.
“The unemployment rate did tick upwards in Canada, it’s up to 13.7 per cent, because there are more people looking for work at the same time,” he says. “But nevertheless, it does look slightly encouraging.”
Tkacz says it points to a rebound in the job market, and the broader economy.
