More government assistance is needed to help cash strapped municipalities cope with COVID-19 shutdowns.
That’s the feeling of Red Lake Mayor Fred Mota who is reacting to a federal announcement to fast track $2.2-million in Gas Tax funding.
“We welcome the dollars from the federal government and we will put that in our bank to use for next year. But there’s no new dollars coming from the federal government and we haven’t seen any dollars in regards to what is happening as of late in our communities.”
Mota stresses the $249,000 Red Lake is receiving isn’t new money.
Mota says they are in the hole like many communities across northern Ontario.
“We are trying to dig out slowly but surely with budgets and moving forward. But we need support from the federal government and we also need support from the province and we haven’t received any to date.”
