This is National Paramedic Services Week with the theme this year ‘Pandemic: Paramedics on the Front Line.’
The Kenora District Services Board says their paramedics play an essential role within the healthcare system as first responders that make the first contact with patients during the coronavirus health crisis.
Director and Chief of Emergency Medical Services Andrew Tickner says “The KDSB is proud of how its Northwest Emergency Medical Services staff and paramedics have responded to and navigated the COVID-19 pandemic as a first responder. The COVID-19 pandemic has unequivocally proven the passion and selflessness that our paramedics encompass within their role.”
Tickner is also thanking local communities, businesses and individuals who have donated Personal Protection Equipment.
“This act of kindness ensures that paramedics and their patients stay safe during these unprecedented times.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he’s particularly grateful this year.
“It’s a time for all of us to celebrate and thank the women and men on the frontlines of our healthcare system. Across the country paramedics and communications officers stand ready to help Canadians in need.”
He notes “Throughout this pandemic you’ve shown up for Canadians and you’ve shown us the very best of courage, compassion and dedication. We’re determined to be there for you.”
Trudeau says they will do so by working with the provinces and territories on a wage top-up for essential workers and ensuring there is enough PPE to go around.
