A Red Lake teacher has been honoured for his commitment to physical and health education and being a leader in the well-being of children and youth.
Tom Doherty is a recipient of the National Award for Teaching Excellence in Health Education.
For over 30-years, Doherty has supported and initiated various programs for schools that promotes safe, active and engaging activities.
“Mental health being such a huge factor and physical activity also having a huge impact on that, it’s kind of nice to be recognized for the things that you are doing in order to improve the students’ life.”
Doherty says “Especially at the Junior level in school. It’s about them getting to enjoy the sport and then getting them to see and realize that they can do the fundamentals that are needed in order to pursue at the higher level.”
He adds “For me organized sports is such a huge character builder for the students and I really feel that is something that’s needed within the educational system and within society today.”
