Kenora MP Eric Melillo is urging the federal government to not use the tragic events in Nova Scotia to push their gun control agenda forward.
He stresses “Our hearts are with the people of Nova Scotia.”
Melillo stresses the timing for debate on the issue isn’t right given the shooting and current health crisis.
He says he believes there will be an opportunity to have that talk in due time.
The Conservative member says the focus right now should be on community healing and getting through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Melillo says time is needed to ensure everyone has all of the facts and evidence on gun control.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters last week that the government will be moving ahead with legislation but didn’t give a specific timeline.
Trudeau says his party made a strong commitment during the election and they will see that promise through.
“We are resolute that we need to move forward on strengthening gun legislation. On strengthening gun control, in smart common sense ways and on banning assault style weapons from this country. They have no place in our communities and our country. That’s why we will be moving forward with legislation to ban that.”
Trudeau says as a nation we need to discuss what changes can be made to prevent similar situations like the one in Portapique, Nova Scotia.
