A major shake-up in the Township of Ignace.
Mayor Don Cunningham and Chief Administrative Officer Marsha Reader have both tendered their resignations.
Cunningham stresses he’s making a stand that victimizing town employees can’t be tolerated.
In a letter sent to Council, Cunningham says “Being Mayor has been an informative learning experience. It’s also been one of the most ethically and morally challenging.”
“To have been witness to how a very vocal group of Ignace citizens have taken it upon themselves to continually victimize Township staff on social media and in the community, to such a point that it has affected their personal and professional lives and that of their family members.”
Cunningham goes on to say “This has not been beneficial in the attraction and retention of qualified professional Township staff members and attracting of investors to our community. Personally, I have been proud to have had the honour to work with the Township management and staff members.”
Cunningham stresses municipal business will continue and the Ignace Emergency Operations Group is well in place to continue efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He his joined by CAO Marsha Reader.
Reader sent CKDR News the correspondence that was sent to important partners today.
“It has been an absolute honour and privilege to have the opportunity to serve alongside our Mayor and staff, and work with individuals such as yourselves the past two and a half years. Our communities are so very blessed to have you providing the leadership you do. May you continue to succeed in your roles. Please do keep healthy and safe. Any time we have an opportunity to connect in the future, Mr. Mayor and I would truly value and appreciate it!”
Deputy Mayor Debbie Hart will now fulfil the role of Mayor.
No announcement has been made on the vacant CAO position.
