The federal government has started accepting applications from those seeking assistance through the Canada Emergency Response Benefit program.
It’s available to anyone 15 and older who can’t work because of COVID-19, but don’t qualify for regular employment insurance benefits.
Payment is $2,000 a month for up to four months.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says those applying online should receive their first cheques in about 3 to 5 days.
Trudeau says applicants who set up direct deposit are expected to receive a first payment within three to five days.
Those who use mail should receive a first payment within 10 days.
The Canada Revenue Agency will initially open its application portal to those born in the first three months of the year, with those born in other months able to apply later in the week.
The agency is trying to keep demand from overwhelming its online and telephone systems.
People who are normally eligible for employment insurance can continue to apply through EI and Service Canada, and they will automatically be enrolled in CERB.
You can go to http://www.Canada.ca for more information.
If applying by phone, you can call the toll-free line at 1-800-959-2019.
If you stopped working because of #COVID19, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit may provide you with temporary income support of $500 a week for up to 16 weeks. Your day to apply depends on your birth month. Details: https://t.co/BQ5H6gbzTH pic.twitter.com/OWH1ufJ6s4
