Local schools are closed for at least another month thanks to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean teachers and students aren’t keeping busy.
Derek Haime is the Director of Education with the Kenora Catholic District School Board, which oversees operations at St. John School in Red Lake.
He says they are working to make the best out of a bad situation.
Haime says teachers have already reached out to their students and some have used Google Classrooms, Chromebook and Microsoft teams to hold online classes.
“We’re not trying to duplicate the school face-to-face learning experience but we are trying to assess what are the needs of students and families to continue this learning. What are the challenges they face and we are doing everything we can do address those needs.”
Haime says instructors are focused on reaching out and communicating with kids on how they are doing and what they need to succeed.
He notes this is a new experience for everyone involved and they are endeavouring to provide the best education they can given the circumstances.
