Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada Post employees are still out across the country making sure you get your mail, and there’s something you can do to help protect your local letter carrier.
Changes have been made to how they operate to help flatten the curve, including removing the need to sign for deliveries.
Now, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is asking that we all help protect letter carriers by washing and disinfecting mailboxes, as well as the handrails and door handles on a daily basis.
The Union adds that even though the Public Health Agency of Canada says there is no known risk of the virus entering the country on parcels or packages, postal workers touch more surfaces in a day than most people do and the extra precautions are justified.
Officials add everyone should continue to maintain physical distancing while your mail is delivered.
CUPW President Jan Simpson says people are relying on the postal system to keep the economy going and to get vital goods, so it’s critical that we all do what we can to keep those front line workers safe.
The post office itself is asking those with dogs to keep their doors closed during deliveries, where possible.
