As anxieties raise around the world during the global pandemic, new scams are beginning to pop up.
E-mails and calls asking residents to act quickly and send personal information are typical of scam artists looking to capitalize on fear.
However, there are more attempted scams appearing on social media, including some offering discount medical masks for sale.
David Shipley is the Chief Executive Officer of Beauceron Security and he has one suggestion to avoid being a victim of fraud.
“The big thing is take a break from online when you can. There’s a lot of information that can be overwhelming and criminals are seizing upon that.”
Shipley adds “Any of these things that are designed to sort of ‘you must do something’ and they trigger a fear or a stress response. You should calmly look at them and assess them and that’s one thing you can do to be careful.”
He notes the government would never ask for personal or financial information during the health crisis.
Meantime, the Prime Minister is warning Canadians about a text scam involving the new Canada Emergency Response Fund.
Justin Trudeau stresses the government website is the best place to find reliable information on everything they are doing.
