The Northwestern Health Unit is urging everyone in our area returning from travel outside of Canada to self-isolate for 14-days.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ian Gemmill is also recommending those who are over 70 years old or anyone with a weak immune system to self-isolate to mitigate the risks of COVID-19.
Gemmill says that means staying at home and avoiding contact with others, even if you are feeling well and have no symptoms.
He notes if you do develop a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing while you are self-isolating you should contact the Health Unit COVID-19 hotline at 1-866-468-2240.
If it’s an emergency, call 911 and explain that you are in self-isolation so health care workers can take precautions.
Here are some tips to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our communities:
-Stay home.
-Do not go to work, school, or other public places.
-Monitor your health for fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
-Sneeze and cough into your sleeve.
-Wash your hands regularly or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
-Do not use public transportation, taxis, or ridesharing.
-Ask for help from friends, family, or neighbours with needed errands like going to the grocery store.
-Seek services over the phone or internet, when possible.
-Avoid contact with older individuals or those with chronic illnesses like heart disease, respiratory disease such as COPD and asthma, or diabetes.
