The new entry in the Superior International Junior Hockey League has introduced their first head coach.
Matt Valley will be behind the bench of the Kam River Fighting Walleye next season.
The announcement was made Tuesday at a media conference in Thunder Bay.
The former SIJHL player says he’s anxious to get started.
Valley says his team will compete game in and game out.
Valley is a former defenceman and played 88 career games with the Fort William North Stars and K&A Wolverines.
He went on to play NCAA Division III Hockey with Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin.
The 29-year-old currently coaches the Thunder Bay ‘AAA’ Kings minor Under-18 team.
Fighting Walleye General Manager Kevin McCallum says “I knew I had to find someone who shared our passion for development and moving players to the next level.”
He adds “Matt was our top choice after the interview process. We believe we have the best person for the job and someone who shares our organizational goals and passion.”
The team has also announced four player commitments for their inaugural team.
They include Thunder Bay’s Trystan Goodman, Bryson Cataldo and Jayden Mrakic as well as Calgary’s Carson Gorst.
