Rotating strikes by Ontario high school teachers have been suspended until March 27th at the earliest.
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation says their intent has always been to minimize the impact their labour actions have on students.
Union President Harvey Bischof says “With so many student events planned around and during March Break, we feel that a pause in our job action was appropriate at this time.”
Instead, high school teachers will expand their work-to-rule campaign starting on Monday.
As part of that action, instructors will not complete activities like participating in some meetings, organize professional development day seminars or work on course writing.
Bischof notes a provincial proposal to fund class averages at 23 will still result in significant challenges for students and doesn’t address the core and serious problems caused by short-sighted policies from the Ford government.
He is urging Education Minister Stephen Lecce to return to the table and engage in real, good-faith negotiations.
No new talks are planned between the province and union.
