The provincial government is providing rape crisis centres with $2-million annually.
Associate Minister of Children and Women’s Issues Jill Dunlop made the announcement following word the Ford government was considering a cut of one million dollars in funding.
“In addition to this funding, my Ministry is investing more than $172-million in supports for survivors and violence prevention initiatives this year alone and we will continue to work with shelters and front-line workers.”
Dunlop these centres are providing critical support for victims of sexual assault and human trafficking.
NDP critic Jill Andrew says the money is not enough, because rape crisis facilities need at least $14 million to continue their operations.
Andrew says the investment works out to about $24,000 for 42 centres.

Recently, we learned the PCs were planning to cut $1mil in funding to Rape Crisis Centres in Ontario.
We mobilized – and they backed down. Sadly, the $2mil we won is STILL NOT ENOUGH. We need $14 mil.
Survivors should be allowed to heal – not forced to fight the govt. #onpoli pic.twitter.com/CDpCcUfbH0
