The number of Indigenous people locked up in federal prisons is now beyond the 30% mark.
That’s according to new data released by Canada’s Correctional Investigator.
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair is concerned with the trend, but adds there are several factors as to why.
“It includes very significant problems and issues around substance use and misuse in some of our communities; Methamphetamine, alcohol, opioids. But it’s also issues of generational trauma that need to be addressed.”
Blair believes changes can occur within the corrections system, including providing better services, exploring alternative justice measures, and diversion programs.
He adds more work needs to be done in communities, courts and by police to address the challenging social issues.
