Gerald Munroe Barr
March 24, 1932 – December 16, 2019
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerald Munroe Barr on December 16, 2019 at the age of 87.
Gerald was born March 24, 1932 in North Andover, Wisconsin. Gerald spent his childhood in Wisconsin.
He attended Grade 9 in Dewit, Iowa. Grade 10 and 11 he attended Dryden High School as his father had bought Cedar Point Musky Camp in Waldhof. Grade 12 he graduated in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.
Dad returned to Wisconsin and in 1951 he served 4 years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War where he as an aero mechanic technician. After his service he moved to Vermilion Bay where he helped run Barr’s Esso and Maple Leaf restaurant, and eventually bought out his brothers and father. Dad ran Barr’s Esso and Maple Leaf Restaurant for 32 years.
Dad had a great love for the small community of Vermilion Bay. He told me he had been originally offered a service station in the Bahamas but turned it down. He said he was happy with his decision as Vermilion Bay was his favorite place he had lived. Dad was also a member of the Lion’s Club and a Mason.
Gerald was predeceased by his wife, Caroline; son, David Atton Barr; brothers, David Lee Barr and Gary Barr; his parents, Harold and Daisy Barr.
Gerald is survived by his children son, Rod Barr (Patty) and his daughters Credie Cooper (Wayne) and Candace Wetendorf (Jeff) and Pam Martin (John), and sister Val Johnson (Steve). Grandchildren, Jeff Barr, Brittany Barr, Brandon Barr, Veronica Barr, Brant Cooper, Christine Cooper, Josh Wetendorf, Tristan Wetendorf, Braydon Wetendorf, Michaela Levy, Mathew Martin, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Thank-you Dr. Kroeker, Dr. Olson, for all your care and support, you really went that extra mile for our dad. Thank-you for the staff on 2nd East, you treated us with such kindness.
As per Dad’s request there will be no service at this time, cremation has already taken place. This summer, at time of interment, there will be a small graveside service.
