A win for legal aid clinics in Ontario as provincial funding will remain as it is now for the next fiscal year.
Co-chair of the Association of Community Legal Clinics Trudy McCormick says the announcement is good news.
However, McCormick states “We still need to work with the government and with Legal Aid Ontario to repair some of the damage that was done by the cuts that we suffered this year.”
The government is also planning to make changes to the Legal Services Act that protects and strengthen community legal clinics, including the Northwest Community Legal Clinic.
McCormick says “The clinic will continue to exist as a local organization, governed by a local board of directors and that we can access the needs in our communities and deliver appropriate services for our community.”
She notes there were concerns services would become centrally mandated and not tailored to meet local needs.
