The Ontario government is seeking the help of hunters as it takes steps to ensure sustainable wildlife populations in the northwest.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is conducting its annual Chronic Wasting Disease surveillance program.
The goal is to help detect the disease, minimize the risk of entering the province, and protect hunting opportunities for future generations.
Ministry staff will be visiting local hunt camps and you can help by giving them permission to remove a small amount of tissue from the deer head for analysis.
Bow and firearm hunters are also encouraged to take the head of their harvested deer to a ministry freezer depot.
You are asked to provide your contact information, the date and general location of the harvest to help officials monitor the untreatable brain disease.
Areas being monitored in our region include Management Units 8, 9A, 9B, 10 and 13.
The program will run until mid-December.
