Treaties Recognition Week activities continue at schools across the Keewatin Patricia School district.
The week long event started on Monday with opening ceremonies in Sioux Lookout and will close on Friday at Evergreen School in Kenora.
Equity and Inclusion Administrator Jen McMaster says as part of their commitment towards reconciliation, it’s important that all students, staff and communities are aware of treaty relationships between non-Indigenous and Indigenous people.
McMaster says students are learning more about the history of Treaty #3, Treaty #5 and Treaty #9 and she stresses it’s important to recognize that we are all treaty people.
“We want to ensure that we support a deep understanding of our relationships with one another and how those relationships have been shaped historically and what still impacts them today. This is a time for us to reflect on the intentions of the Treaty document.”
She says knowledge and education will help staff guide students on what their role is in making a brighter future for Canada.
McMaster adds Treaties Recognition Week is a perfect opportunity for their schools to partner with community organizations including Friendship Centres, the Metis Nation of Ontario and local First Nations communities.
