A volunteer group in Sioux Lookout is trying to breath new life into prospects of building an indoor community pool.
The municipality has been without a pool for several years now.
Andrea Cole is with the Sioux Lookout Water Ways Committee.
Cole says the addition of a pool has been tried before, but her group is remaining positive as they work with staff and council.
The public is being asked to sign a petition encouraging Council to pursue the idea.
An online survey is also available.
Cole says the benefits are endless.
Cole stresses a pool would provide a welcoming space for youth and give them recreational options, especially in the Winter.
She adds “It would just create a whole different range of options for youth and really anyone, of any age in Sioux Lookout. And people coming from the surrounding areas.”
Cole points to the heavy traffic of people visiting Sioux Lookout from remote First Nations.
Cole adds a pool would open up new programming opportunities in the community, including swimming lessons, swim teams, therapy, rehabilitation and water fitness classes.
Meantime, Sioux Lookout Council has scheduled a Special Council meeting for 2:30pm today. (Wednesday)
Water Ways says on the agenda is application options for an Infrastructure Fun of up to a maximum of $50-million.
It states one option being presented is a Multi-use Recreation and Culture facility with a pool.
