A new facility in the fight against cyber-crime for the Ontario Provincial Police.
A new Cyber Operation Centre is located Orillia.
Commissioner Thomas Carrique says cybercrime has become an important line of work for the OPP.
“The rapid advancements of digital technologies continue to change our world and those within it. The landscape and threats of terrorism and organized crime leverage technology,” says Carrique.
OPP first established a separate Cybercrime Investigations Team in 2013.
It’s responsible for investigating cyber-crimes within Ontario where technology is the target; helping in other cases that may have an online component and collecting, analyzing and sharing intelligence data.
OPP have since established a Digital Forensics Unit and Forensic Video Analysis Unit. The Video Analysis Unit is the first of its kind in Canadian and focuses its attention on video sources such as home security systems, cell phones and dashboard cameras.
Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says cyber-crime has become increasingly sophisticated and has dramatically changed the nature of policing.
“The cyber operations center will allow the OPP to host all of its fiber crime investigative and forensic digital evidence resources under one roof,” says Jones.
