The Amarok Society has received a generous donation from the Rotary Club in Dryden and Kenora for the construction of a new school in Bangladesh.
The organization received $4,500 during a presentation to Dryden High School students last Friday.
Dryden Rotary says more money continues to flow in for the initiative.
The International organization teaches extremely poor, illiterate mothers in slums of mega-cities to become volunteer neighbourhood teachers.
Co-Founder and Director Tanyss Munro says the money will help them build a new school in Bangladesh.
Munro says the school would teach 25 mothers and 125 children.
The ultimate goal is naming the facility the “Dryden Rotary School.”
Munro explains “We’ll take over two or three tiny slum dwellings, right were the mothers live, and simply convert it to a school. And by convert, nice mats on the floors that the mothers sit on. We get white boards, markers and some shelving.”
Munro took time to promote their program to DHS students.
She talked about the power of education and the power of an individual to make changes to the world.
“With one in every three children growing up illiterate, it’s something that we shouldn’t be putting up with. We really need to do something about it.”
