The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is expressing its thanks and gratitude to the seven bikers who have returned from a 500-kilometre trip to the Experimental Lakes Area, west of Vermilion Bay.
Executive Director Alexis Kanu says the 5th Annual trek is an important fundraiser for their organization.
“What this ride supports is a citizen science network that is spread out across Manitoba and that is looking for phosphorous hot-spots. Phosphorous is the nutrient that causes algae blooms on Lake Winnipeg and other lakes.”
Kanu adds “We are engaging citizen scientists to help us pinpoint where that phosphorous is coming from. With support from the ‘Cycling for Solution’ ride we’re able to expand the network, engage more volunteers, buy more equipment and collect more samples.
She notes they are collecting data at 160 sample sites across the province this summer and they will be sharing that information with everyone involved at the end.
Kanu says the self-supported trip is an inspiring example of citizens leading the charge for solutions for our lakes.
Kanu says the riders are really committed to the cause and recognize this is a tough set of circumstances that we have to face but that we all have a role to play.
