The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says it wouldn’t be surprised to hear if the federal carbon tax continues to rise.
Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has suggested the tax may continue to go up but only until 2022.
Federation Spokesperson Paige MacPherson disagrees, noting the country still has a long way to go to reach Paris Accord climate change commitments.
MacPherson says the government has even stated the tax will have to increase to reach their final target.
She notes “it’s unfortunate that the government won’t come clean and just admit that their carbon tax will keep going up and up and up.”
MacPherson says with an election coming up, there needs to be a concise outline of the carbon tax and any costs that will impact taxpayers in the future.
MacPherson also questions why the federal government is now asking for input from the provinces, when initially it was a top-down approach, with some getting a carbon tax imposed on them by Ottawa.
