If your cleaning your house this coming long weekend, a reminder to hold on to some of your unwanted items.
The City of Dryden, Miller Environmental and Dryden Rotary are once again hosting Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on September 7th.
Rotary member Roger Gould was a guest on the CKDR Morning Show today (Tuesday) and he says the free event has always been well received.
Gould says “last year they diverted 15,594 kilograms of material from the Dryden Landfill site”.
He says they saw 461 vehicles come through last year, which was an increase from the year prior.
“So it’s really good that people are cleaning out their houses and giving it to us so it doesn’t go back to the landfill.
The following are examples of old and unwanted products you should bring to the depot:
Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, antifreeze, furniture polishes and waxes, wood preservatives, household cleaners, toilet and drain cleaners, acids, car batteries, metal polishers and cleaners, paint stripper, solvents, old paint, rust remover, acetylene, fluorescent light bulbs/tubes, batteries, mercury thermometers, hobby chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
You can also bring products that are now banned, such as DDT and 2, 4, 5 and -T.
Gould says PCB contaminated wastes, radioactive, pathological explosives or hazardous waste generated by commercial operations will not be accepted.
You are asked to keep individual products separated and all items should be labelled.
Gould says volunteers will be at the Public Works Yard from 8:30am to 4:00pm on September 7th to take you items, noting you don’t even need to leave your vehicle.
