The Trudeau government is spending $22.2-million over three years to expand its national strategy to protect children from sexual exploitation.
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says most of that money will go to police forces that deal with the problem of child pornography.
“$15.25-million will be provided to Internet Child Exploitation Units in provincial and municipal police forces to enhance their local capacities.
Goodale adds the rest of the money will go to Internet service providers and towards research into the problem.
He says “We need to keep working with the Internet companies to improve their technology, so they are better able to recognize the material that needs to be removed.”
Goodale believes stopping the problem is one which needs constant attention and is an ongoing process.
He notes “dealing with these horrible threats to children and the abuse of children is something where we can never relax because technology will never relax.”
No child should ever be a victim of sexual exploitation. Today I announced $22 million more to combat this heinous crime online by bolstering local police and prosecutors, enhancing awareness and collaborating with industry.
