There is progress in returning Pikangikum evacuees home, after staying at host communities, in escaping a nearby forest fire.
Thunder Bay’s Deputy Fire Chief says the return of residents started yesterday (Monday), when two flights left Winnipeg, with more scheduled.
Greg Hankkio adds the people staying in the Lakehead are the last to go, with their departure scheduled for early next week.
The fire is being held at 3,835 hectares in size, with 20 crews assigned to the blaze.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as well as Pikangikum leadership say they feel comfortable with people going home.
