Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fire crews appear to be getting the upper hand on a blaze burning near the community of Pickle Lake.
The 833-hectare fire was tempered thanks in part to rain on the weekend and the work of 17-crews assigned to the blaze.
The Ministry has constructed a roughly 2.5-kilometre fire guard to ensure nearby buildings and property are protected.
The fire is still considered not under control but doesn’t threaten the community of Pickle Lake.
The MNRF is also making great progress on a wildfire near Pikangikum First Nation.
Significant rainfall over the weekend has allowed crews to hold the blaze at 3,835 hectares in size.
There are now 24 crews dedicated to the fire with additional support staff allocated.
Crews are now identifying and extinguishing hot spots and are removing sprinkler and protection systems from buildings.
With Ministry crews already occupied in those two fires, another stubborn fire has required their attention.
They are now dealing with an out-of-control blaze northwest of Trout Lake in the Red Lake district.
The fire is currently listed at 6,803 hectares in size but weekend rain has helped in suppression efforts.
Seven crews are now working on the blaze and assuring it’s steered away from nearby property.
The forest fire hazard is currently low to moderate across our region.
