The Canadian Revenue Agency is expressing its concern with scammers using the agency’s name to bilk Canadians out of their money.
The scam is using text messages, phone calls and emails.
Director General of Collections Tammy Branch says there’s only certain reasons why a real Agency employee will call you.
Branch says they will contact you if you haven’t filed an Income Tax and Benefit return, you owe taxes or money to a government program, or the CRA has questions about records or documents already sent to the agency.
She stresses personal banking information is never requested.
Branch adds the CRA will not send you links by email of forms to fill out.
She points out they will never demand immediate payment by Interact e-transfers, bitcoin, pre-paid credit cards or gift cards.
