The Federal government says it’s standing up to the U.S. but also standing up for the forest industry.
Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr says they will continue to fight American tariffs on softwood lumber duties but notes they are taking steps in the mid-term to help the sector.
The action plan includes $867-million in aid for softwood lumber producers and communities that rely on the forest sector.
The funding includes loans and loan guarantees to strengthen the sector.
Carr adds the help provides $260-million to help diversify the market base for Canadian lumber products.
He notes there is also funding to help viable forest companies make capital investments.
Carr says the government is also providing $10-million to help Indigenous communities explore new initiatives in the forest sector.
Funding has also been set aside to support forestry workers who want to upgrade their skills and transition to a different industry.
Carr will join forestry officials this weekend to drum up support in China.
