Rehabilitation work has started at the Agimak Lake Dam.
Work will include replacing old concrete, replacing two aged retaining walls, installing an automated water gauge, securing of handrails, modifying security fencing and adding closure plates to prevent fill loss.
Mayor Kimberly Baigrie says the Ignace community is happy that the work has begun.
“This is a very important project for the entire community, to ensure that the water levels are properly controlled by the dam and that residents along the lakeshore are able to both enjoy their waterfront properties, but also be cognizant of any potential flooding issues,” said Baigrie.
The Ontario government announced $22 million in funding last November for repairing the Ignace dam and five other dams in the province. The Ministry of Natural Resources says the amount allocated for the Agimak Lake Dam work is $1.2 million.
Municipal land next to the dam is being used as a staging area for materials and heavy equipment. Temporary fencing will be set up to ensure safety of the site while construction is underway.
The project officially began on Monday and is scheduled for completion in late August.
