Stan Bates was born in Neepawa, Mb on Dec 22, 1925, the second of 4 boys to Sydney and Marjorie Bates. Stan was educated in Neepawa and in August 23, 1943 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve at HMCS Chippawa in Winnipeg.
By Feb, 1944 Stan was undergoing training at HMCS Cornwallis in Halifax. After a brief stint at HMCS Stadacona he was stationed at HMCS Scotian from June, 1944 until July, 1945. Stan volunteered for service in the war against Japan on May 3, 1945 but by the time he arrived at HMCS Naden in Esquimalt, BC on Sept 27, 1945 Japan had surrendered. After spending 4 months on the West Coast at HMCS Naden and HMCS Royal Roads he was discharged in Jan, 1946.
Following the war Stan returned to Neepawa and in 1947 married Fay Piett. Stan and Fay had 2 sons – Brian and Don. In 1956 they moved to Dryden, Ontario where Stan worked in the paper mill until his retirement.
