Benny Mike Yurkiw
July 15, 1940 – September 11, 2023
The family of Benny Yurkiw are saddened to announce his passing on September 11, 2023 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre with family by his side.
At the young age of twelve, he took a train to Portage La Prairie to shine shoes at his uncle’s shoe store. From there he worked several jobs until working for the CPR as a signal maintainer. He met his wife Margaret in Macgregor, Manitoba, and finally ended up working at the Dryden Papermill until his retirement in 2004.
His early years in Dryden, he played various sports including hockey, curling, and baseball. He was an active member of the Ukrainian Hall until it closed. Benny was a very active member of the Boy Scouts and worked his way up to Queen Scout. He really enjoyed travelling many miles around the region enjoying the scenery.
Benny is survived by his wife of 59 years, two sons; Donald (Heather) Yurkiw, and Bradley (Vicki) Yurkiw, two grandkids; Hailey (Cam) Hoedl, and Nolan Yurkiw, one great-grandson Sunny Hoedl, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Benny is predeceased by his parents Mike and Lydia of Portage La Prairie, and younger sister Caroline Boles, and younger brother Gerald Yurkiw of Portage La Prairie.
As per the family’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
