Landfill fees for waste disposal will soon be increasing for residents of Sioux Lookout.
Rates are going up at the Hidden Lake Landfill starting on September 23.
As an example, the current minimum charge is $7.80 for a 50 kg load.
The minimum charge will increase to $8.43.
The rate hike doesn’t apply to bag tags for curbside pickup.
The municipality bases its rates on the annual Consumer Price Index.
Manager of Public Works and Infrastructure Jeff Hawley says, “The landfill does not receive any funding from your tax dollars, it is a user pay system. This means the landfill fees charged must generate all of the money it needs to operate in a year.”
Hawley adds matching the annual CPI is necessary to ensure that the landfill has adequate funds to pay for increased fuel costs and other operating expenses.
