A group of First Nations youth from Northern Ontario is set to travel to parts of Southern Ontario to explore careers in Public Safety thanks in part to Indigenous Police Chiefs of Ontario and Indigenous Service Canada.
A majority of the participants are between 16 and 17 years old.
Police services involved in the initiative locally include Lac Seul Police, Treaty Three Police and Nishnawbe Aski Police.
The youth will visit a number of agencies including the CSIS Headquarters, RCMP Headquarters, Rideau Hall, Canadian Museum of History, Canadian Forces Base, Six Nations Fire Station, University of Waterloo, and OPP Academy.
They will take part in activities that include search and rescue training, CPR training, flight simulator, anatomy lab, and fire response.
The participants will also be provided with tablets to share their experiences through photos and video.
The trip will take place from August 14 to 20.
Treaty Three Police Service Chief of Police Kai Liu says, “It will be a brand-new experience for them all as this trip is a first of its kind in Ontario.”
