A new Healing Centre has opened its doors in the Sioux Lookout area.
The Omamun Ziibiis Cultural Centre will be used for traditional healing and other Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA) programming.
The grounds were formerly known as River’s Edge Lodge, located on Highway 664.
James Morris is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Authority and says the location provides traditional and accessible health services connected to the land the people they serve.
Morris says, “This is another step in our organization’s move toward taking control of our own health care. It is important that our people find healing and recovery while having access to the land and this camp helps in that way.”
The newly renovated camp is situated on the traditional territory of Lac Seul First Nation and Chief Clifford Bull says, “I believe the facility will greatly enhance the mental well-being and recovery of the people in our region. Being on the land and close to the water is conducive to healing.”
Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance took part in the opening ceremony held on National Indigenous Day with a pancake breakfast and games.
Lawrance says the facility will provide a naturally beautiful setting for people coming to Sioux Lookout for medical needs.
He adds, “The ability for SLFNHA to provide traditional and land-based programming at this camp will be supportive for clients.”
