The Ontario government says it is updating the science and technology curriculum for Grades 1 to 9 in an effort to modernize education.
Minister in charge Stephen Lecce says the changes will be implemented in September just in time for the 2022-23 school year to ensure all students have the foundational and transferable skills they need to compete in a rapidly changing world.
“To make students more connected to their daily lives through learning such as coding, investigating emerging technologies, energy, environment, and connections to food literacy.”
Some of the science, engineering and math courses will teach learning about artificial intelligence, skilled trades as well as finances.
Lecce stresses, “Parents want to know that their child is learning relevant and current knowledge that reflects the world that we live in today. And that is a world that is becoming more and more inter-connected through technology every single day.”
Ontario’s elementary science and technology curriculum was last updated in 2007 and the Grade 9 course was revised back in 2008.
